THERAPIES FOR CHILDREN Play Therapy Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. -- Pablo Picasso As Picasso well knew, children see the world through a different lens. Children are still in touch with the magic of imagination; whereas adults are too smart for that. It is in recognizing the power of imagination and story for children that Play Therapy draws much of its effectiveness. One particular form of Play Therapy is Sand Tray therapy, in which the child places different figurines, such as adults, children, animals, princes, princesses, beasts, and witches, in the tray and makes up a story. In doing so, the child is able to reveal the story that is living inside themselves in a symbolic way. If you asked the child what was bothering her, she would simply say "Nothing." But through the magic of imagination and story, she can express what is happening. Then by working with the story, the child and the therapist can work together, so that the child can find a way to summon her own strength to slay the dragons that are scaring her.
