ENERGY THERAPIES

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing)

EMDR is based on the following:

- that traumas create disturbances in the ways our brains process information.

- that eye movements are connected to this information processing.

- that by having the client imagine the trauma, while doing different exercises with imagery, affirmation, eye movements, and other techniques, the brain's information processing system will be stimulated, and the fearful thoughts and feelings will be removed.

For our example, Sharon would be asked to visualize a time when she felt shy as vividly as possible. She would be asked to rate her anxiety on a scale from 1 to 10. She then would provide a competing positive statement, such as "I'm a social butterfly at parties." She would rate her current belief in this statement on a scale from 0 - 8. Then, with her eyes she would follow the rhythmic back-and-forth movement of the therapist's finger, until at a certain point, she would be asked to remove the visual image and inhale deeply. She would then give a revised rating on the anxiety scale. This procedure is repeated until the anxiety rating is 2 or lower, and the belief in the positive statement is 6 or higher.

Thought Field Therapy

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) is based on the belief that distressing thoughts create blockages in the body's electrical energy system. The therapist teaches the client to introduce a change into the energy system, usually through tapping on acupressure points, and other energy exercises. By doing so, the belief is that the energy blockage will be eliminated, and the negative thoughts and feelings will disappear.

With our example, Sharon would be asked to recall experiences of being shy. The therapist would assess what is happening in Sharon's energy field while she having these thoughts. Sharon would then be given different energy exercises to try and change the flow of the energy (such as tapping on a sequence of meridian points); so as to clear the stuck energy associated with shyness.
