EXPRESSIVE THERAPIES

Art Therapy

Art Therapy would help Sharon get in touch with her more creative, or "right brain" part of her. The belief is that the right brain helps us access what is going on emotionally, and that by expressing our emotional truths through art, we bypass the guards of the intellect, and experience healing. Sharon might draw or paint out scenes from her childhood, of the times when the criticism came down like rain, and of seeking shelter deep inside herself where no one could get to her. In doing so, long forgotten emotions such as grief and rage may surface to be released. By expressing these feelings through the art, her energy rigidity is freed, allowing her to paint more satisfying scenes for her present life.

Movement / Dance Therapy

Based on similar principles as Art Therapy, except this time the expression is through movement and dance.

Psychodrama

Also based on similar principles to Art Therapy, except this time the expression is through guided dramatic action, just like in a play. This is an especially popular way to do group therapy.

For example, if Sharon was in a group therapy situation, she might create a script for the group to act out, perhaps a scene from childhood of being criticized, or one from her present life, where the dating anxiety shows up. The therapist would assign roles to different members of the group. Sharon might be in the protagonist, or central role; or someone else might play that role, and express afterwards what it felt like to be in Sharon's situation. Other characters might embody other parts of Sharon, such as a part that wanted to defend herself against her father's criticisms. The process of acting out the dramas brings unconscious thoughts and feelings forward; and it is through this process that the energetic rigidity is released, and new choices become available.

Emotional Release Therapy

Emotional release therapy works on the premise that the stuck beliefs are held in place by repressed grief and rage, much the same way bricks are held together with mortar. For Sharon, the frozen beliefs about needing to act and feel shy are the bricks, and the mortar is comprised of repressed emotions. Clients are guided to create the safety to express the blocked feelings. Once this is done sufficiently, the hurtful beliefs are released, and the person is free to choose how to live their lives in the present - to rebuild their inner house, so to speak. As with all Humanistic therapies, the goal is to help the person connect with their core goodness.
