Biofeedback
Biofeedback is a therapeutic technique that uses electronic
systems to show internal processes, such as heart rate, brain waves, etc;
and how these change in response to different situations and thoughts.
By learning about her physiological responses, Sharon would then be taught
techniques to gain some control over them. This could be very useful in
regards to her dating anxiety, as Biofeedback is very useful for reducing
stress and anxiety, alleviating psychosomatic symptoms, as well as other
conditions including asthma and stress related disorders. It is also used
as a primary treatment for moderate or severe migraine syndromes, tension
headaches and Raynaud's disease.
With Biofeedback, Sharon assumes the responsibility
for her own improvement. The desired changes can only come about through
regular practice of the instructions given by the therapist.
Hypnotherapy/ NLP
Imagine that your mind is like a movie screen, with a myriad of images and thoughts continuously flashing across. Let's also say that the more an image is held on that screen, the more it comes into your life in some way. However, the reverse is also true: the less an image is on the screen, the less we will actually experience it in our lives.
This provides an explanation for why we often don't get what we want: we'll focus on something we want for a few seconds, only to have another image take it place. Therefore, the image of what we want doesn't have a chance to "set." You can think of it like creating a figure in clay. If you bake the clay, the image is set. But if it's not baked long enough, you can take the clay and just mush it all back together.
Herein lies the secret of the success of hypnosis. You see, what hypnosis does is to slow down that movie screen, to get it to focus on what's been referred to as a "single dominant idea." You are placed in a state of deep relaxation, a state in which you are open to positive suggestions. In this state, your mind is no longer whizzing around, but focused on the positive image being presented to you. Many hypnotherapists interview the client beforehand to get the details of a positive vision for the client, the components of the story so to speak. And then once in trance, the hypnotherapist weaves those components into a new way of experiencing life. The mind is in a state of being able to focus on this image, without the image being knocked out by who's picking up the kids today, what's for dinner, which bills you have to get in the mail, etc. In this way, hypnosis is able to directly harness the power of the subconscious mind to create the reality you want. The subconscious mind has been compared to a photocopy machine, basically trying to reproduce whatever image you focus upon. Imagine using a photocopy machine, but right when it's trying to make the copy, you yank the original off the glass, and replace it with another. You're just going to get a bunched of blurred images, with a few distinct bits and pieces. That's similar to how many people live their lives. We have difficulty creating change because we don't focus on the positive vision long enough. Hypnosis helps to keep the original on the glass, so that this positive vision can become a new way of life.
